If you have signs or symptoms of a heart problem, such as an irregular heartbeat, palpitations, or unexplained fainting, it may indicate a potentially serious condition that needs attention fast. At the office of State of the Heart Cardiology & Vascular Clinics our highly-skilled professionals are experts at diagnosing and treating heart rhythm problems and developing customized treatment plans based on your needs.
Regular electrocardiograms allow us to look at your heart’s activity at one point in time — the duration of your test. But abnormal heart rhythms and cardiac symptoms may come and go. That’s why we may want to evaluate your heartbeat over time while you go about your normal activities. That’s where a Holter monitor comes in.
A Holter monitor is a battery-operated portable device that measures and records your heart’s activity continuously for 24 to 48 hours or longer depending on the type of monitoring used. The device is the size of a small camera, with wires and electrodes that attach to your skin. Wearing one causes no pain and has no risks associated with it. The information we receive from it can shed light on why you are experiencing symptoms and if your heart is getting enough oxygen. The Holter monitor can also indicate if your current heart medicines are working.
A specially trained technician will attach the Holter monitor and instruct you how to record your symptoms while wearing it. After the test period, return the monitor to the technician. He or she will process the information and prepare a report for us to review. From there, we will determine the treatment plan that’s best for you.
